Getting Your Home Ready for Autumn

September 8, 2026
By Katie Phillips

As we move into September, the way we use our homes starts to change. Windows aren’t open quite as often, evenings are spent indoors again and the hallway gradually fills with coats, shoes and everything that comes with wetter weather.

It’s also around this time that we start noticing the areas of the house that have been overlooked during the summer.

Getting your home ready for autumn doesn’t need to mean a huge seasonal clean - it’s more about taking care of a few areas now so that your home feels clean, organised and easier to manage as routines change.

Here are our top tips for getting your home ready  for autumn…

Start With What Summer Has Left Behind

After several months of open doors, garden traffic, holidays and children being at home more often, floors and busy family spaces can usually benefit from some extra attention.

Hallways and entrances are a particularly good place to start. Clearing away summer shoes and bags, cleaning floors properly and making some room for coats and wet-weather footwear will make everyday life easier once autumn arrives.

It’s also worth looking at the areas we don’t necessarily notice during a normal weekly clean - skirting boards, behind furniture, under beds and less accessible corners can all collect more dust than we realise.

Give the Kitchen a Reset

Summer can be surprisingly hard on a kitchen - more meals at home, children helping themselves throughout the day and people coming and going all add to its use.

Before autumn routines settle in, take some time to clear out the fridge, check cupboards and remove anything that has accumulated on worktops.

This is also a good opportunity to give frequently used appliances and those easily missed areas a more thorough clean.

The aim isn’t to reorganise your entire kitchen - it’s simply to get it back to a point where it works well for the household again.

Make Bedrooms Ready for Cooler Weather

September is often when wardrobes begin changing too. As lighter summer clothing is put away and warmer clothes come back out, it’s a useful opportunity to sort through anything you no longer wear or children have outgrown.

Bedrooms can also benefit from some extra attention before heavier bedding comes back into use. A thorough clean, fresh bedding and a properly dusted room can make everything feel much fresher without needing to completely reorganise the space.

Pay Attention to the Places You’ll Be Using More

As the weather changes, we naturally spend more time indoors. Living rooms, kitchens and other shared spaces start working harder again, so these are the areas worth getting properly in order.

Rather than trying to make every cupboard and drawer perfect, think about what tends to make your home feel difficult to manage. It might be clutter accumulating on surfaces, laundry that never quite gets put away or a hallway that becomes chaotic as soon as everyone comes through the door.

Addressing those areas now can make the weeks ahead feel so much calmer.

Think About What You Actually Need Help With

For many of the families we work with, autumn also marks the return of much busier routines.

Cleaning is only one part of keeping a home running, there are also beds to change, laundry to deal with, ironing waiting and general tidying that never quite disappears. When you’re already balancing work and family life, those jobs can take up a surprising amount of your time.

That’s why our domestic service at The White Cleaning Company can go beyond regular cleaning. Depending on what your household needs, our teams can also help with practical housekeeping tasks that make the day-to-day running of your home easier.

Having the same team visit regularly is an important part of that. Over time, they get to know your home, understand how you like things done and recognise where a little extra attention may be needed.

It means the service becomes genuinely personal to your household, rather than simply working through the same standard checklist at every visit.

Get Ready for the Months Ahead

Preparing your home for autumn isn’t about making everything perfect before the season changes. It’s about getting the house back to a place that feels manageable, dealing with the jobs that have built up over summer and thinking about what will make everyday life easier as you spend more time at home.

If autumn feels like the right time to get a little more support at home, we’d be happy to help. Whether you need regular cleaning, practical housekeeping or a combination of the two, we’ll take the time to understand what would make the biggest difference to your home.
